BYSTANDER INTERVENTION TRAINING

Bystander intervention is a critical component in preventing harmful and potentially dangerous situations. It involves individuals taking action to intervene in situations where they observe potential harm being inflicted on another person. The importance of bystander intervention cannot be overstated, as it has the potential to save lives and prevent serious harm.

WHAT IS BYSTANDER INTERVENTION?

Bystander intervention refers to the act of stepping in to help someone who is experiencing harm or distress. It can involve a range of actions, from simply checking in to see if the person is okay, to directly intervening to stop the harm or seek assistance from others.

Bystander intervention is an important way to promote safety and well-being in our communities, and can be especially effective in preventing incidents of violence or harassment. It is important to remember that bystander intervention is not about being a hero or risking your own safety, but rather about taking small actions that can make a big difference in someone's life. By learning about bystander intervention and practicing these skills, we can all play a role in creating a safer and more supportive world for everyone.

WHat you will learn

We have therefore designed this Bystander Intervention Training with four goals in mind. At the end of these trainings, we hope that participants leave feeling more empowered with the following skills and knowledge:

  1. Being able to recognize when someone needs help

  2. To act as active, empathetic bystanders

  3. To disrupt the myths and narratives which trivialize and normalize street harassment within their own communities, and

  4. To realize that they each have the power to build safer communities

WHat each session includes

PART 1

The training will begin with facilitators and participants discussing what street harassment is, and how it has become so normalized. We believe these discussions are important as they draw attention to the severity and widespread nature of street harassment for many different people. We also hope that this would reduce the resistance and stigma around speaking up about such issues.

PART 2

This part will focus on what it means to be an active bystander, followed by the current best practices on methods of intervention. This portion is intended to equip participants with the skills and knowledge to safely and confidently intervene––should they ever bear witness to street harassment.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

This training is designed to provide a safe and interactive space for participants, where ideas can be shared, explored, and discussed among communities through engaging activities.

As a grassroots community organization, we want to acknowledge that we are not experts on any of these topics. We want to focus instead on the pre-existing knowledge and resources within individuals, and building on their skill sets and ideas of accountability from there.
